Adams is entering the final year of his contract

If you were hoping that the Green Bay Packers and star receive Davante Adams could reach an agreement on an extension prior to the team’s 2021 opener against the New Orleans Saints, you might want to stop holding your breath. While speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Adams — who is entering the final year of his contract with the team — bluntly said that there won’t be any contract agreement between himself and the team before Week 1.
“No,” said Adams, via Pro Football Talk. “No chance, no.”
Adams’ comments come around a month after Packers GM Brian Gutekunst noted that they would continue contract discussions with the 28-year-old All-Pro into the season. Adams is seeking to become the NFL‘s highest-paid receiver in football. How he does that really seems to be in the eye of the beholder. If Adams is looking at AAV, he’d need to outdo DeAndre Hopkins, who sees an average annual salary of $27.25 million. Meanwhile, Amari Cooper has the highest contract in the NFL in total value at $100 million.
Similar to Aaron Rodgers, who nearly departed the team this offseason, Adams has kept his future in Green Bay beyond this coming season up in the air. He and Rodgers even posted identical pictures of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen on Instagram earlier this summer, seemingly signaling that they could be embarking on one “Last Dance” with the Packers this season. Adams even noted Wednesday that he and Rodgers have an “identical mindset” entering 2021.
“[K]ind of how I look at it and how we started to look at is as a team, is like, it really is the last dance for having this type of group here,” Adams said. “We don’t know what the next year is going to hold — leaving myself and Aaron and stuff out of it. There’s still a lot of big parts to this team, other than us here. So the way we look at it is, this is the team we have right now so we have to go out there and take care of it. There’s really no excuse, because we’ve got a lot of the same guys from last year and we just added on, I feel like got better than we were the past couple years. So there’s no excuse but to take care of business now.”
As the Packers look to take care of business on the field in 2021, it will be curious to see if any business can be executed off it and ensure Adams is in Green Bay for the foreseeable future.
