Dak Prescott successfully returned to the field on Thursday night, making his first start since Week 5 of the 2020 season against the reigning champion Buccaneers. But that doesn’t mean the Cowboys quarterback is completely moving on from the shoulder injury that limited his action in the lead-up to the season. According to NBC Sports’ Michele Tafoya, Prescott is set to undergo additional MRIs every two weeks throughout the 2021 campaign in order to monitor his shoulder’s condition.
Tafoya described the MRI schedule as mostly a precautionary measure from the Cowboys star, but it’s notable considering ESPN previously reported that Prescott might not reach 100% health at any point this season. Team owner Jerry Jones publicly assured fans that the QB did not enter Week 1 with any physical limitations, but the biweekly MRI plan suggests there’s a possibility that extended action could aggravate Prescott’s shoulder injury.
Prescott has also instituted a new pregame workout plan in order to stretch his shoulder, per Tafoya. At least early in Thursday’s game against Tampa Bay, he didn’t seem to be bothered throwing, making quick decisions on the Cowboys’ first few drives and advancing into Buccaneers territory twice in the opening quarter.
