What you need to know about Tennessee
The Volunteers got past the Bowling Green Falcons last Thursday, and the extra yardage (476 yards vs. 218 yards) paid off in the 38-6 win. The Vols jumped to an early 14-0 lead, but then allowed the Falcons to scrap their way back into the game by halftime. But a strong third quarter helped Tennessee pull away against the MAC squad.
The game was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point Tennessee had established a 28-6 advantage. The Vols can attribute much of their success to running back Jabari Small, who rushed for two TDs and 124 yards on 23 carries. Tiyon Evans, who is questionable for this matchup (undisclosed), added 116 yards and a score on 16 carries. Quarterback Joe Milton III struggled with accuracy in his Tennessee debut, completing just 11-of-13 passes. He did, however, score two rushing touchdowns.
What you need to know about Pittsburgh
Meanwhile, the Panthers out-gained UMass 612-216 in a 51-7 home win in Week 1. With Pitt ahead 23-0 at the half, the contest was all but over already. Quarterback Kenny Pickett had a solid day as he passed for two TDs and 273 yards on 38 attempts, in addition to picking up 39 yards on the ground.
The Panthers are known for their defense and that’s what could give them an edge in this matchup against a rebuilding Tennessee offense. Pittsburgh ranked 20th in total defense last season and it gave up very little in the opener against UMass.
