The 2021 U.S. Open comes to a close this weekend with a pair of intriguing matchups with grand slam titles on the line. On the women’s side, Leylah Annie Fernandez takes on Emma Raducanu in a contest between unseeded players. Both are young sensations, making tremendously unexpected runs through the field in New York. Top Raducanu vs. Fernandez predictions

The anticipation will be off the charts for this matchup, even with both players coming from seemingly out of nowhere to reach the final. In fact, Raducanu and Fernandez combine to form the first men’s or women’s all-unseeded grand slam final in the Open Era, and this is also the first final pitting teenagers together at the U.S. Open since Serena Williams and Martina Hingis faced off in 1999.

While both players are making history, Raducanu’s run is even more historic, as it came out of qualifying. She is the first qualifier to reach a grand slam final in the professional era, as well as the youngest grand slam finalist since 2004. On top of that, Raducanu has allowed her opponents to average only 4.5 games won per match in the tournament, winning every single set. She is looking to become the first British woman to win a grand slam title since 1977, but Raducanu will face a worthy adversary in Fernandez.

Fernandez, who won the Monterrey Open without losing a set earlier this year, has a penchant for the dramatic, and she has upset victories over three different top-five seeds in the tournament.

Fernandez famously knocked off two-time champion Naomi Osaka, then defeated both No. 5 seed Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals and No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals while displaying incredible resilience. This is the first major final for both players, but Fernandez is the first woman to knock off three top-five seeds in a U.S. Open since 1999.
