What to Know

The SMU Mustangs are 5-1 against the North Texas Mean Green since September of 2015, and they’ll have a chance to extend that success Saturday. SMU will stay at home another week and welcome North Texas at 7 p.m. ET Sept. 11 at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. These two teams are strolling into their matchup after big wins in their previous games.

The Mustangs were the big favorite in their most recent contest, and for good reason. They took their game at home last week with ease, bagging a 56-9 victory over the Abilene Christian Wildcats. With SMU ahead 35-3 at the half, the game was all but over already. QB Tanner Mordecai was a one-man wrecking crew for SMU, passing for seven TDs and 317 yards on 31 attempts.

SMU’s defense was a presence as well, as it collected three interceptions and one fumble. Those interceptions were spread across their defensive unit.

A well-balanced attack led the Mean Green over the Northwestern State Demons every single quarter on their way to victory last week. North Texas put the hurt on Northwestern State with a sharp 44-14 win. The game was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point North Texas had established a 41-14 advantage. RB DeAndre Torrey had a dynamite game for North Texas; he rushed for three TDs and 227 yards on 22 carries.

North Texas’ defense was a presence as well, as it got past the Demons’ offensive line to sack the quarterback five times for a total loss of 31 yards. Leading the way was LB KD Davis and his 2.5 sacks. Those were the first sacks for Davis.

Their wins lifted both teams to an identical 1-0. Both the Mustangs and the Mean Green have easy wins in recent memory. We’ll see which one’s ego takes a hit when they face off.
