Chase Young was surprisingly silent in Week 1 for the Washington Football Team. Young made some noise in Week 2 for Washington, but for the wrong reasons.
The reigning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year was called for a roughing the passer penalty on New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones that led to New York’s first touchdown of the game. On a second-and-12 from the Washington 16-yard line, Young went through two Giants linemen — one being Andrew Thomas — to get to Jones. As the Giants quarterback was trying to get rid of the ball, Young hit the quarterback to the ground and was awarded a 15-yard penalty for his efforts.
What makes this penalty conflicting is Giants guard Nick Gates hooks Young before he is able to get to Jones, but no holding penalty was called on the play. The Giants were awarded a first down and scored two plays later on a 6-yard touchdown run by Jones.
Jones finished 4-for-4 for 45 yards on the drive and had three carries for 23 yards and a touchdown to give New York the early 7-0 lead. Young, who logged just one pressure in 40 pass-rushing snaps last week, hasn’t gotten off to the start he expected. He did record a sack on Jones later in the first quarter, stalling a Giants drive on third down.
The roughing the passer penalty certainly didn’t help Young, whether the call was fair or not. The NFL wants defensive players to transfer their body weight away from the quarterback as he’s falling to the ground, which — by the official’s interpretation — Young didn’t achieve on that play.
