The 2021 season is winding down and one of the things that comes along with the conclusion of a season is discussion about which, if any, managers will be fired. The Diamondbacks have the worst record in the National League at 48-104, but manager Torey Lovullo is safe.
General manager Mike Hazen told reporters on Thursday (including Zach Buchanan of The Athletic) that Lovullo’s contract has been extended through the 2022 season with an option for 2023.
Lovullo, 56, is wrapping up his fifth season at the helm for Arizona. He’s 333-365, though that record has taken on significant damage these last two seasons. The Diamondbacks were 93-69 and won the NL wild card game in 2017, his first year. They were 82-80 the next season and then overachieved to 85-77 in 2019.
They started this season 15-13 and then completely fell apart. They lost 48 of their next 56 games, putting together one of the worst months in baseball history in June, when they went 3-24. For a stretch after that, they actually played somewhat competent baseball. They went 11-12 in July and had a stretch in August where they won nine of 14. They have currently, however, lost 14 of their last 17 games and are fighting for the number one overall draft pick.
With 104 losses and 10 games remaining, they have a shot at the most losses in franchise history (111 in 2004).
The Diamondbacks and Orioles are tied for the worst record in baseball at 48-104 apiece right now. The Orioles will also retain their manager, Brandon Hyde, reports Dan Connolly of The Athletic.
