Manchester United recorded 28 shots against Aston Villa on Saturday, had 60 percent possession, earned a penalty kick in added time yet still lost, 1-0. It was Kortney Hause’s dramatic 88th-minute winner that helped Villa pull off the upset of the weekend, spoiling a chance for United to move to the top of the Premier League table.
The Red Devils were on the front foot all match long but managed to put just four of their 28 shots on frame. Superstar midfielder Bruno Fernandes had the chance to rescue a point in added time via a penalty kick, but the Portuguese player sent the ball flying into the stands at Old Trafford with a horribly executed take. Curiously, Cristiano Ronaldo, who has scored over a 100 penalty kicks in his career, did not take the kick with his fellow efficient countryman getting the opportunity. United have now lost three of their last four games in all competitions, including being booted from the EFL Cup against West Ham on Wednesday.
As for Hause, the defender came up big with a fine front-post run, beating David de Gea with a technically sound header, shocking the home fans. Take a look:
While Hause, to that point, was the hero, a handball just minutes later from him gifted a penalty to the hosts with a draw being likely. Bruno, who usually is a sure thing from the spot, looked more like an America football place kicker with this horrendous execution:
The victory for Villa was their first in the league against United since December 2009. As for the Red Devils, they are in a concerning run of form after going back-to-back games without scoring a single goal.
And it won’t get any easier for United as they face Villarreal on Wednesday in the Champions League in what is a rematch of last season’s Europa League final.
