Texas Tech quarterback Tyler Shough will be out until mid-November with a broken collarbone, coach Matt Wells said on Sunday. The 6-foot-5, 225-pound junior suffered the injury in the Red Raiders’ 70-35 loss to Texas on Saturday. Wells revealed that Shough played two plays after suffering the injury before doctors declared him unfit to play.
Shough is 64-of-92 passing for 872 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions in four games in 2021. He was 9-for-11 for 68 yards and an interception vs. the Longhorns before leaving the game. Senior Henry Colombi entered the game in Shough’s place and threw for 324 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.
It’s a disappointing development for Shough, who transferred from Oregon prior to the season after serving as the Ducks starting quarterback for the majority of the 2020 season. He threw for 1,559 yards and 13 touchdowns, and rushed for 271 yards and two scores in seven games for the Pac-12 champions. He was replaced by Anthony Brown in the loss to Iowa State in the Fiesta Bowl, then chose to transfer rather than battle Brown for the top spot on the Ducks depth chart going into the 2021 season.
Colombi’s performance in a pinch against the Longhorns is a good sign moving forward. He wasn’t a liability last weekend, and No. 1 reps in practice should help him build upon that performance. With that said, the news comes at a critical time for the Red Raiders’ program.
Wells is 11-15 (5-14 Big 12) through two-plus seasons in Lubbock and isn’t exactly on steady ground after being hired from Utah State. The Red Raiders’ are 3-1 this season with wins over Houston, Stephen F. Austin and FIU. They’ll travel to West Virginia on Saturday to take on the Mountaineers at 2:30 p.m. ET.
