Notre Dame will travel west to take on BYU at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas as part of the Shamrock Series on Oct. 8, 2022. The matchup brings together two programs currently ranked in the AP Top 25, as the Cougars rank No. 13 with Notre Dame sitting at No. 9 entering Week 5 of the 2021 season.
The matchup brings together two of the most powerful religious universities in the nation as the Catholic Notre Dame and Mormon BYU face off in the desert. The programs combined to win 21 games in 2020 during breakout seasons with the Fighting Irish earning its second trip to the College Football Playoff in three seasons. BYU and Notre Dame are also the premier FBS independent programs in America, though the Cougars will head to the Big 12 by 2023.
BYU and Notre Dame have played eight times previously with Notre Dame holding a 6-2 edge. In the most recent matchup, Tommy Rees outdueled Taysom Hill in a 23-13 Notre Dame win on Nov. 23, 2013.
Notre Dame began playing Shamrock Series games in 2009. The yearly matchups take place at a neutral site around the country and are used to help market the program to its national fan base. Notre Dame did not play a Shamrock Series matchup in 2017 and had its 2020 game against Wisconsin postponed by COVID-19 until 2026.
The 2021 Shamrock Series matchup was against No. 18 Wisconsin on Sept. 25 with the Fighting Irish beating the Badgers 41-13 at Soldier Field in Chicago. Other Shamrock Series locales include Yankee Stadium, Fenway Park and the Alamodome.
