Oklahoma’s 2022 recruiting class got a serious kickstart Friday, when four-star shooting guard Otega Oweh announced his commitment to the Sooners live on CBS Sports HQ. Oweh chose OU over Miami, Penn State and Seton Hall after a strong summer showing helped solidify his status as a top-tier prospect.
He is Oklahoma’s first commitment of the 2022 class as first-year coach Porter Moser seeks to establish himself on the recruiting trail after spending the last 10 seasons at Loyola Chicago. Oweh is considered the No. 73 overall prospect and No. 8 shooting guard in the country by the 247Sports Composite.
“I just felt at home,” Oweh said of his visit to Oklahoma. “I didn’t want to leave. I built a good connection with the coaching staff. I just felt comfortable being there and with the development plan they have for me. I loved it.”
The 6-foot-4 guard from Blair Academy in Blairstown, New Jersey saw his recruiting pick up while playing on the summer circuit with Team Final, which won the Peach Jam in July. In particular, Oweh “provided a spark as a driving scorer” and “locked down other teams top perimeter threats,” according to 247Sports.
247Sports basketball analyst Travis Banham had this scouting report of Oweh:
“He’s a very tough two-way guard. He’s an absolute dog of a defender who can guard positions one through four. He’s really strong, he’s tough, he’s athletic and he really gets after it on the defensive end. On the offensive end, he’s continuing to improve. He’s a great slasher in transition and also in the half court. His jump shot is continuing to improve, he’s an effective mid-range shooter and he’s continuing to get better from the perimeter. He’s just a very valuable piece.”
