MLB playoff picture, standings: Yankees, Red Sox lead tight AL wild-card race; Giants can clinch Saturday

The 2021 Major League Baseball regular season ends Sunday, and baseball’s playoff picture is taking final shape as went enter the month of October. We officially have eight of our 10 postseason teams, as the White SoxGiants, Dodgers, BrewersRays Cardinals, Astros, and Braves have secured berths. The only things left to sort out is whether the Giants or Dodgers win the NL West (San Francisco enters Saturday with a magic number of one) and who will play in the AL Wild Card Game.

The Red Sox currently hold a one-game lead over the Blue Jays and Mariners for the second wild-card spot, with the Yankees one game up on Boston. The possibility of a massive four-way tie or three-way tie still exists.

So how will all this shake out? We’ll find out the answers before the postseason gets started on Tuesday. But it’s also worth asking, what would the MLB playoff picture look like if the season ended today? We have the answer to that question, as well as up-to-date standings and playoff odds, below.
