NFL Week 5 odds, picks: Lookahead lines for Broncos-Steelers and Eagles-Panthers

NFL Week 5 odds, picks: Lookahead lines for Broncos-Steelers and Eagles-Panthers

We publish plenty of gambling content here at CBSSports.com, but this column is one of the most important. NFL lines are alive, and move every day. The biggest movements happen on Sunday night, after almost all of the current week’s games are completed. You want to grab the best line possible without having to buy points, and that usually means putting money down a week ahead of time.

Every Friday, we take a look at the NFL lines a week in advance to determine if we should put money down now in order to get the best bang for our buck. Depending on what happens in Week 4, all of these lines could change before we reach Week 5, so we want to go ahead and get our bets in if we see a nice opportunity for an upset, or to jump on a favorite before the line moves even more in their favor.

Before we jump into some early bets to consider, here are the lookahead lines for Week 5. All NFL odds come courtesy of Caesars Sportsbook.

Picks to consider

Jets at Falcons (-4)

The Jets are very bad, and while they face a Titans team this week that may be missing their top two receivers, I don’t think they will do anything to convince Vegas that they should drop the spread for their Week 5 matchup. As for the Falcons, they have an opportunity to build off of their win last week this Sunday. Washington has been a disappointment. It’s not because of backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke; it’s because of the defense. This unit was expected to be one of the best in the league, but they rank second-worst in the NFL through three weeks. If the Falcons defeat Washington on Sunday, I guarantee this line will increase.

Broncos (-2) at Steelers

The jury is still out on the Broncos. Are they a good team or a paper tiger? It appeared we were going to find out this week, as they host a good team in the Ravens, but Baltimore is so banged up it may not be the matchup we are anticipating. Even Lamar Jackson has missed practice with a back injury. He’s expected to play this Sunday, but he’s obviously not 100 percent healthy.

Then, there’s the Steelers. Both the offense and defense looked bad during their 24-10 loss to the Bengals last week, and now they have to travel to Lambeau to take on Aaron Rodgers and the hot Packers. I think it’s possible this line could jump more than one full point on Sunday night if Denver wins.

Eagles at Panthers (-4)

The Eagles were blown out by the Cowboys last week on a national stage and now have to host an angry Chiefs team. I think Nick Sirianni’s squad is trending downward. Speaking of the Cowboys, that’s who the Panthers take on this week. I think it could be a close game, but that Carolina will ultimately lose. Even if the Panthers do find their way to the loss column for the first time this year, this line still could move in their favor if it’s a close game, or if the Eagles get blown out on their home field. I think at least one of those things happen.
