The Salt Lake Police department has made an arrest related to the killing of Utah football player Aaron Lowe. The department arrested Buk Buk, 22, and charged him with aggravated murder, attempted murder and felony discharge of a firearm. Buk was arrested in Draper, Utah, about 30 minutes south of Utah’s campus.
Lowe, 21, was killed in a shooting at a house party on Sept. 25 just hours after the Utes beat Washington State 24-13 in their homecoming game. An unidentified 20-year-old woman remains in critical condition after the shooting. The shooting happened at a residence just miles from the University of Utah’s campus, according to police.
“In a time of need, we turned to our community,” Salt Lake City police chief Mike Brown said in a statement. “We asked people to come forward and to share the information they had. Because of those tips and the unrelenting pursuit of justice from our homicide detectives, we have arrested the person accused of murdering Aaron Lowe. So many lives have been impacted from this senseless shooting.”
The murder comes less than a year after Lowe’s high school best friend and Utah teammate, running back Ty Jordan, was killed in an accidental shooting in December 2020. Lowe changed his number from No. 2 to No. 22 to honor Jordan during the season and was awarded the first Ty Jordan Memorial Scholarship.
Lowe’s West Mesquite high school team in Texas honored Lowe and Jordan before their game against McKinney North on Sept. 30 by holding a 22 jersey on the sideline pregame. Utah Jazz star Donovan Mitchell wore a No. 22 jersey at practice on Saturday to honor them.
“We are devastated to hear about the passing of Aaron Lowe,” Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said in a statement on Sept. 26. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Aaron’s family and friends, along with the other individual who was harmed in this tragic incident. Aaron was a great teammate, friend, brother and son and was loved by anyone who crossed paths with him. He will be deeply missed.”
Lowe played reserve defensive back for Utah. He appeared in 20 games for the Utes, posting three tackles.
