Why Coastal Carolina can cover

The Chanticleers can score and have reached 49 or more points in all but one game this season — a 28-25 win at Buffalo in their only other road game. Redshirt freshman quarterback Grayson McCall is powering the offense, completing 69-of-86 passes (80.2 percent) for 1,113 yards and 10 touchdowns. McCall has also carried 27 times on the season for 69 yards (2.6 average) and two scores.

McCall’s favorite target is senior wide receiver Jaivon Heiligh, who leads the team with 24 catches for 499 yards (20.8 average) and four touchdowns. He registered a touchdown catch in each of the team’s first four games before being shut out by Louisiana-Monroe last week. His best game was in the season opener against the Citadel. Against the Bulldogs, he caught six passes for 133 yards (22.2 average) and one TD.

Why Arkansas State can cover

Despite Coastal Carolina’s impressive resume, the Chanticleers are not a lock to cover the spread. That’s because the Red Wolves have never lost to the Chanticleers on their home field, posting a 28-27 win on Nov. 16, 2019, and a 51-17 triumph on Oct. 14, 2017. Redshirt junior transfer quarterback James Blackman leads the offense. The former Florida State backup has completed 102-of-172 passes (59.3 percent) for 1,264 yards and eight touchdowns.

His top target has been freshman wide receiver Corey Rucker. Rucker leads the team with 28 receptions for 458 yards (16.4 average) and six touchdowns. He has at least three catches in each game this season, including a nine-catch, 138-yard and three-touchdown performance against Central Arkansas in the season opener. Last week at Georgia Southern, he had seven receptions for 71 yards and two touchdowns.
