University of Northern Colorado offensive coordinator Max McCaffrey has been reprimanded for inadvertently hitting a fan with a broken clipboard, the school announced on Wednesday. The incident occurred during Saturday’s 40-7 loss to Montana State.
McCaffrey, who is the older brother of Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey, ended up breaking his clipboard on the sideline and threw it into the stands. The clipboard struck a Montana State fan in the crowd.
“Max is embarrassed by the incident and is working privately to apologize to the fan hit by the errant toss,” Northern Colorado athletic director Darren Dunn said in a statement. “After visiting with Max and the entire football staff, I am confident we will have no further engagement with fans of our opponents.”
Northern Colorado is coached by former Denver Broncos wide receiver Ed McCaffrey, who is Max and Christian’s father. Max’s younger brother, former Michigan quarterback Dylan McCaffrey, also plays for the school.
McCaffrey was hired as the team’s wide receivers coach in 2020 while he was still trying to make it in the XFL. The former Duke wide receiver had stints with the Green Bay Packers, Jacksonville Jaguars, New Orleans Saints Oakland Raiders, and San Francisco 49ers.
In the summer of 2021, McCaffrey was promoted to offensive coordinator after serving as the wide receivers coach for a season.
