Andy Murray knows exactly how painful double faults are on the tennis court, and this week the Scottish star found they’re just as painful off the court. A thief took Murray’s tennis shoes ahead of his BNP Paribas opening match, and the pair came with something extra: Murray’s wedding ring.
In a Thursday Instagram post, Murray detailed how he lost his shoes and ring then pleaded for help in finding them. Murray — who married Kim Sears in 2015 — said he left his shoes outside to air out as they’d gotten “damp, sweaty and smelly” from a practice session earlier in the day. His wedding ring was tied to the laces because he can’t play with it on.
Because Murray’s California hotel room didn’t have a balcony, he decided to leave the shoes under his car overnight. They were gone by the morning. When Murray returned to practice with a new set of shoes from a local pro shop, someone asked where his wedding ring was — prompting Murray’s “oh no” feeling to sink in.
“Yes I know I’m an idiot and in hindsight it seems like a terrible idea,” Murray, 34, wrote on Instagram, “but I need some help.”
“Needless to say I’m in the bad books at home so I want to try and find it,” he added in the video.
Murray, the world’s 121st-ranked player, will compete against world No. 51 Adrian Mannarino in the opening round of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells. His Southern California experience has been rough so far, so Murray is hoping for a turnaround by then.
