For Mexico vs. Canada, Gonzalez is picking Mexico to win to nil at +120 odds. Tata Martino’s squad hasn’t played up to its full potential through the first three games of Concacaf World Cup Qualifying, but Mexico still has to be happy with having earned seven points and sitting two points clear at the top of the table.
Against Jamaica on Matchday 1, Mexico got an 89th-minute goal from Henry Martin to capture all three points. El Tri followed that up with a 1-0 win in Costa Rica in which they looked solid defensively. In Panama, the Mexicans overcame a 1-0 deficit early to steal a point with a 76th-minute Jesus Corona goal.
Now, they should be regrouped and are expecting to have Estadio Azteca at 50 percent capacity for a critical matchup against Canada. While the Canadians have more talent on their roster than ever before, the stress of playing at altitude in front of one of the world’s most ravenous fanbases may be too much.
“Mexico has been wildly inconsistent yet lead qualifying with a 2-1-0 record,” Gonzalez told SportsLine. “Tata Martino knows a victory here will put them in a golden spot moving forward, and the daunting task of playing at the Estadio Azteca will be too much for the Canadians.”
