Villanova landed its first five-star commitment since the 2019 recruiting cycle on Thursday afternoon as top-25 talent Cam Whitmore, the No. 1-ranked prospect in the state of Maryland, announced live on CBS Sports HQ that he’s committed to the Wildcats. Whitmore chose Villanova over a final list that included Illinois and North Carolina.
“They treated me like it was family,” said Whitmore of his recent campus visit on HQ announcing his decision. “That was a big part: They treated everyone like family.”
Whitmore is a 6-foot-6 combo forward who had a strong summer culminating with a big performance at Peach Jam that moved him in the recruiting rankings from a four-star recruit to a five-star recruit. 247Sports’ Eric Bossi highlighted Whitmore’s versatility in particular as an asset that could be valuable to Villanova as soon as he arrives on campus in evaluating what the commitment means for the program.
“He’s someone who is capable of coming in and making an immediate impact. College basketball is all about versatility,” said Bossi. “He’s a natural wing but he can also play as a small-ball four-man … there’s a lot about his game that says he could be an immediate factor.”
Whitmore is a 2022 recruit so he won’t be arriving until next year, but already he’s developed a strong relationship with Wildcats coach Jay Wright and the staff. He figures to be the foundation of a recruiting class that right now ranks inside the top 10 with his commitment with four-stars Mark Armstrong and Brendan Hausen also in the fold.
