The United States men’s national team hopes to remain in first place in Concacaf World Cup qualifying when the squad takes its two-game winning streak to Panama on Sunday in a game you can watch live on Paramount+. The red, white and blue are 2-2-0 so far in World Cup Qualifying and are edging out Mexico on goal differential for the top spot. Panama, on the other hand, have been one of the surprises with five points from four games. Sitting in fourth, a win from them would move them into a tie with the U.S. on points.

Storylines

Panama: Coming off their first loss, Thursday’s 1-0 defeat to El Salvador, means they need to pick up the pieces now and rebound. The defense is conceding just 0.5 goals per game, but the attack has been quiet with just one goal per game. Panama, along with the U.S., are two of the three teams in qualifying who have only conceded twice. But as their Sept. 8 draw with Mexico showed, they are still allowing a lot of chances. They most hold a low block, remain poised in their tackling and hope that this U.S. team just has an off day in front of goal.

USA: No Weston McKennie, Antonee Robinson or Zack Steffen for the U.S., which puts the team down probably two starters in McKennie and Robinson. Add to that the fact that Christian Pulisic, John Brooks and Gio Reyna aren’t with the team, and there are plenty of key guys missing. But that hasn’t really mattered during the last two games, and there is certainly some depth there. Robinson and Steffen miss out due to travel restrictions between the UK and Panama, preventing smooth returns to their clubs. McKennie is dealing with an injury, but the hope is he will be available for next Wednesday’s clash with Costa Rica. For Robinson, we could see George Bello play at left back or have Sergino Dest slide over. As for McKennie, this opens up minutes potentially for Yunus Musah and Kellyn Acosta.

Prediction

The U.S. get a draw on the road in a match where the victory was there for the taking. Pick: USA 1, Panama 1
