Seahawks’ Quandre Diggs: ‘It’s not my job’ to figure out how to fix under-performing defense

Five weeks into the season, the Seattle Seahawks defense is not looking good. The 450.8 yards per game Seattle has allowed is the worst mark in the NFL, the 25.2 points per game the Seahawks have yielded ranks 21st, and prior to Thursday night’s subpar performance against the division rival Los Angeles Rams, the Seahawks ranked just 25th in Football Outsiders’ defensive DVOA.

Obviously, they need to do something to fix this — especially with Russell Wilson now nursing an injured finger on his throwing hand. Just don’t ask safety Quandre Diggs (who had an interception in the end zone on Thursday) how it should be done.

“It’s not my job” to figure out how to fix things, Diggs said, according to Corbin Smith of the Seahawks Maven blog. “We just gotta do what we gotta do.”

That’s easier said than done. The Seahawks are having myriad issues on the back end at the moment, including but not limited to Diggs’ safety partner Jamal Adams‘ issues in coverage. They’ve allowed huge games to Julio Jones (6 receptions, 128 yards), Justin Jefferson (9-118-1), Tyler Conklin (7-70-1), Adam Thielen (6-50-1), Deebo Samuel (8-156-2), Robert Woods (12-150), and Cooper Kupp (7-92) over the last few weeks, and it’s not as though there are reinforcements waiting in the wings to upgrade their personnel.

Whether it’s a scheme change or better execution, the Seahawks are going to have to figure this out with the group they have, barring an in-season trade.
