Who’s Playing

Hawaii @ Nevada

Current Records: Hawaii 3-3; Nevada 4-1

What to Know

The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors watched the action from their couches last weekend, but are set to take to the field. Hawaii and the Nevada Wolf Pack will face off in a Mountain West battle at 10:30 p.m. ET on Saturday at Clarence Mackay Stadium. The Rainbow Warriors aren’t favored, but they just beat the odds in their last game, so don’t count them out.

It was a close one, but two weeks ago Hawaii sidestepped the Fresno State Bulldogs for a 27-24 victory. The win came about thanks to a strong surge after the third quarter to overcome a 24-10 deficit. Hawaii’s RB Calvin Turner did his thing and punched in one rushing touchdown in addition to snatching one receiving TD.

Hawaii’s defense was a force to be reckoned with, as it collected four interceptions and two fumbles. DB Khoury Bethley picked up that interception and then proceeded to rub salt in the wound by taking it back the other way for a touchdown.

Meanwhile, if there were any doubts why Nevada was a heavy favorite Saturday, the team quickly laid those doubts to rest. They blew past the New Mexico State Aggies 55-28 last week. The contest was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 31-7. QB Carson Strong had a stellar game for the Wolf Pack as he passed for six TDs and 377 yards on 32 attempts. Strong’s 65-yard touchdown toss to WR Melquan Stovall in the second quarter made for one of the most memorable moments of the night.

The Rainbow Warriors are now 3-3 while Nevada sits at 4-1. A pair of defensive stats to keep an eye on: Hawaii is stumbling into the matchup with the 227th most touchdowns allowed in the nation, having given up 22 on the season. The Wolf Pack have experienced some struggles of their own as they are 183rd worst in the nation in passing touchdowns allowed, with nine on the season. It’s possible one of these Achilles’ heels will wind up tripping the losing team up.
