United States men’s national team star Gio Reyna is likely out for the November World Cup qualifiers due to his hamstring injury, a source told CBS Sports on Monday. The 18-year-old Borussia Dortmund talent picked up the injury while playing for the U.S. during the September World Cup qualifiers. He was originally expected to return sometime this month, but as we reported last week, any potential comeback was set to be pushed until November.

It was originally thought that he would need at least 2-3 more weeks to recover as of mid-October, but Reyna could likely stay sidelined for longer. A source said that his potential absence from the team in November is because of a slow recovery. While he is likely out, it is still not certain, and he’ll continue to be monitored in the coming weeks.

If he can’t go, it would be a blow for the national team but nothing new. Both Reyna and Christian Pulisic missed the October games, as the U.S. beat Jamaica and Costa Rica and lost to Panama. The Americans are in second place in qualifying in Concacaf with a 3-2-1 record and in strong position to advance to next year’s World Cup in Qatar.

The U.S. will host Mexico on Nov. 12 before traveling to face Jamaica on Nov. 16 in the November window. The Nov. 16 match against Jamaica and all away World Cup qualifying matches for the USMNT can be streamed on Paramount+.
