Why the Blazers can cover

Like everything else having to do with Portland, the conversation starts with Damian Lillard. The perennial league MVP candidate has become more and more outspoken about his desire for the Blazers to work harder towards becoming a championship contender. Whether or not the team made the moves that will accomplish that remains to be seen, but Lillard is sure to come out firing.

The fourth-most points that Lillard scored on any individual team last season came against Sacramento, and he had 101 total points in three games. The Kings were also tied with New Orleans and Oklahoma City as the teams in which he had his second-most assists against, with 26.

Why the Kings can cover

Billups was an assistant coach last season on a Los Angeles Clippers team that was much deeper and played at a much slower pace than Portland did. Lillard will always have the green light to shoot whenever he’d like, but the rest of the team isn’t likely to be throwing up shots indiscriminately. Last season on the road, the Kings allowed the same average of opponent field goal attempts as Portland did at home.

De’Aaron Fox brought it against Portland last season, and averaged 23.7 points per game against the Blazers, and hit nearly half of his 3-point attempts in three games. Fox had a strong season in 2020-21, averaging 25.2 points, 7.2 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game.
