Jamel Herring vs. Shakur Stevenson preview

Boxing observers have had Stevenson on their radar ever since his standout amateur career peaked with the silver medal at the 2016 Olympics. He was the highest finisher for the U.S. men’s team.

The 24-year-old New Jersey native has used his hand speed and footwork to outclass most of his professional opponents, leaving fight fans eager to see him compete against high-level competition.

In June, a vacant interim title bout was arranged as essentially a title eliminator, with the winner getting a shot at Herring for the undisputed belt. Stevenson won a lopsided decision against Jeremiah Nakathila in Las Vegas, but was criticized for his hesitancy to engage after eating a couple shots in the early rounds.

Herring prefers to mix it up on the inside, and he used his volume and power to stop former two-time world champion Carl Frampton as a slight underdog in their April showdown in Dubai.

Herring was a member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic boxing team but saw a good portion of his amateur career interrupted by his commitment to the United States Marines. The Iraq war veteran made his professional debut in December 2012 and won his first 15 professional fights before suffering a loss to Denis Shafikov in July 2016.

The 35-year-old New Yorker won the WBO junior lightweight title with a unanimous decision over Masayuki Ito in May 2019 and has defended it three times since.
