The Associated Press on Monday released its 2021-22 college basketball preseason All-America team led by a litany of juniors and one super senior. The upperclassmen-heavy team is highlighted by Gonzaga junior big man Drew Timme, the star of the preseason No. 1 Bulldogs and one of the most recognizable names in the sport, who was the only unanimous selection. Last season Timme averaged a team-high 19.0 points and 7.0 rebounds for Gonzaga as it went 31-1.
UCLA junior wing Johnny Juzang and Villanova super-senior guard Collin Gillespie are also selections on the AP’s team, making three of the five members of teams ranked in the AP preseason’s top 10. Kofi Cockburn of Illinois (ranked No. 11) and Trayce Jackson-Davis of Indiana (unranked) are the others honored by the AP.
It’s the year of both big men and of veterans in the sport so the AP’s All-America team seems to be representative of what to expect on the season. The five serve as the faces college hoops in a season that should also star the likes of experienced players like Trevion Williams, Hunter Dickinson and E.J. Liddell.
Timme, Juzang, Cockburn and Gillespie were named to the CBS Sports Preseason All-America First Team last week.
