The New York Jets are going to have to manage an offense without Zach Wilson for a few weeks. Wilson, who left Sunday’s game with a knee injury, has a sprained PCL and will be out 2-4 weeks (per ESPN’s Adam Schefter).
Wilson, the second overall pick in this year’s NFL draft, suffered the injury in the second quarter of the Jets’ AFC East clash with the New England Patriots. The hit by the Pats’ Matt Judon appeared to come well after Wilson got rid of the ball. There was no penalty for roughing the passer called.
Wilson did speak after the game about the injury, not pinning anything on Judon for the mishap.
“I threw the ball and I think my toe kind of just got stuck in the ground and Judon just kind of fell on it with all of his weight and that kind of twisted it,” Wilson said. “Felt a pop there and it just was – obviously thinking of the worst-case scenario in my head which sucks but just making sure it’s going to be alright hopefully.
“It’s obviously frustrating, injuries are part of the game of football so just dealing with them as we can and be able to come back…I don’t know a lot about the PCL. Obviously, the pain really isn’t there. It just kind of feels like something’s a little off as far as just being loose or unstable a little bit.”
Mike White is expected to be the starting quarterback while Wilson is out. A 2018 fifth-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys, White had never appeared in an NFL game before coming in for Wilson Sunday. White has been in the Jets organization for three seasons, spending the last two years on the practice squad. He was activated from the practice squad to the game day roster three times in 2020, the only times he was on the active roster prior to earning the backup quarterback job this season. White finished 21 of 32 for 202 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions in the loss.
Wilson has completed 57.5% of his passes for 1,168 yards with four touchdowns to nine interceptions through six games. His nine interceptions are tied for the most in the NFL.
