Fantasy Football Week 9 Waiver Wire: Adrian Peterson, Taysom Hill can fill your key injury gaps

With more injuries and four teams on bye, here are the best options.

This could be a crazy night on the waiver wire depending on what happens with the NFL trade deadline, which ends at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday. So prior to making any moves, you should check back here to see if anything changes with these lists, and we’ll update the column to reflect any news.

As of Tuesday morning, the big stories are the two major injuries that happened in Week 8 with Derrick Henry (foot) and Jameis Winston (ACL) being lost for the season. Both injuries stink, and Henry’s loss could be disastrous for Fantasy managers.

There are replacement options for Henry, including newly-signed Titans running back Adrian Peterson. Yes, that same Adrian Peterson. At 36, he will likely handle the bulk of early-down work in place of Henry, with Jeremy McNichols working on passing downs. We’ll get into that below.

Winston’s absence opens the door for Taysom Hill to start for the Saints, and he becomes a viable starting Fantasy option now. We’ll talk about Hill’s Fantasy outlook below.

There are plenty of other players to add, as well as streamers at DST and kicker. Heading into Week 9, which has four teams on a bye (Tampa Bay, Seattle, Washington and Detroit), we have reinforcements to help your Fantasy rosters.

Editor’s note: For this waiver wire column, we are only looking at players rostered in less than 65 percent of CBS Sports leagues.

Week 9 Waivers
  • Injuries: Dak Prescott (calf), Russell Wilson (finger), Sam Darnold (concussion), Jameis Winston (ACL), Ryan Fitzpatrick (hip), Tyrod Taylor (hamstring), Zach Wilson (knee) and Taysom Hill (concussion).
  • On a bye: Tom Brady, Russell Wilson, Taylor Heinicke and Jared Goff

  • Check to see if available: Derek Carr (86 percent rostered) and Carson Wentz (77 percent). Carr might have been dropped going into the Raiders bye in Week 8. Prior to the bye, he scored at least 22 Fantasy points in consecutive games and will face the Giants and Chiefs in his next two outings. … Wentz has scored at least 20 Fantasy points in five games in a row, including consecutive games with 24 points. He faces the Jets and Jaguars in his next two games.
  • Drop candidates: Matt Ryan (89 percent rostered) and Trevor Lawrence (65 percent). Ryan might be tough to trust while Calvin Ridley (personal) is out, especially in Week 9 at the Saints. He also faces Dallas in Week 10 and New England in Week 11. … Lawrence might be worth adding again after the Jaguars face Buffalo in Week 9 since Jacksonville has Indianapolis in Week 10, San Francisco in Week 11 and Atlanta in Week 12. But it will be hard to trust Lawrence in most one-quarterback leagues even in favorable matchups.

Running Backs

  • Injuries: Derrick Henry (foot), James Robinson (heel), Elijah Mitchell (ribs), Miles Sanders (ankle), Josh Jacobs (chest), Saquon Barkley (ankle), Kareem Hunt (calf), Christian McCaffrey (hamstring), Chris Carson (neck), Clyde Edwards-Helaire (knee), David Montgomery (knee), Jamaal Williams (thigh), Latavius Murray (ankle), Malcolm Brown (quad), Damien Williams (knee), Justin Jackson (quad), Tevin Coleman (hamstring) and Chris Evans (hamstring).
  • On a bye: Leonard Fournette, Ronald Jones, Giovani Bernard, D’Andre Swift, Jamaal Williams, Alex Collins, Rashaad Penny, Antonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic.
  • Drop candidates: Derrick Henry (100 percent rostered), Jamaal Williams (74 percent) and Damien Williams (47 percent). Henry is only worth stashing if you have an IR spot. Otherwise it’s hard to justify holding him with a 6-10 week absence with his foot injury. … Jamaal Williams missed Week 8 with a thigh injury and is now on a bye. He also scored seven PPR points or less in four games in a row. … Damien Williams is clearly behind Khalil Herbert, and hopefully Montgomery will return soon. Williams is also hurt heading into Week 9 at Pittsburgh, and the Bears have a bye in Week 10.

  • Check to see if available: Alex Collins (79 percent rostered), A.J. Dillon (76 percent) and Kenyan Drake (69 percent). There’s a chance Carson could return after Seattle’s bye in Week 10, but stick with Collins through the bye if you can hold him. He hasn’t played great, but he does have at least 15 carries in three of the past four games since Carson got hurt. … Dillon will hopefully continue to be involved like he was last week at Arizona when he had 16 carries for 78 yards. He’s worth stashing, especially as a lottery ticket in case something happens to Aaron Jones. … Jacobs should play for the Raiders this week, but add Drake just in case he is available in case Jacobs is out. And even if Jacobs plays, we’ve seen Drake score 36 PPR points in two games without Jon Gruden.

Wide Receivers

  • Injuries: Calvin Ridley (personal), Deebo Samuel (calf), Davante Adams (illness), Antonio Brown (ankle), Julio Jones (hamstring), Michael Thomas (ankle), Corey Davis (hip), Sterling Shepard (hamstring), Kenny Golladay (knee), T.Y. Hilton (concussion), Sammy Watkins (hamstring), Will Fuller (finger), Curtis Samuel (groin), Michael Gallup (calf), Marquez Valdes-Scantling (hamstring), Terrace Marshall (concussion) and Donovan Peoples-Jones (groin)
  • On a bye: Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Antonio Brown, Terry McLaurin, D.K. Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, Kalif Raymond and Amon-Ra St. Brown.

  • Check to see if available: Cole Beasley (81 percent rostered) and Kadarius Toney (66 percent). Beasley has scored at least 20 PPR points in three of his past five games, including two in a row coming into Week 9 at Jacksonville. With Dawson Knox (hand) out in Week 8 against Miami, Beasley had 10 catches for 110 yards on 13 targets. Hopefully that will continue if Knox is out again in Week 9, but Beasley should be considered a solid No. 3 PPR receiver for the rest of the year even when Knox returns … Toney will hopefully play well with Shepard out. The last time Toney was healthy and Shepard was out we saw Toney score 41 PPR points in two games against the Saints and Cowboys. He’s worth adding in all leagues once again.

  • Drop candidates: Allen Robinson (83 percent rostered), Odell Beckham (71 percent), Randall Cobb (67 percent), Robby Anderson (64 percent) and Laviska Shenault (61 percent). Robinson continues to struggle and has scored 10 PPR points in every game this season. He has a tough matchup in Week 9 at Pittsburgh and then a bye, and there’s little reason to keep stashing him at this point on your Fantasy roster. … Beckham once again struggled in Week 8 against Pittsburgh with one catch for 6 yards on one target. He hasn’t scored a touchdown in six games and has scored four PPR points or less in four outings. Like Robinson, it’s time to move on. … Cobb did well with Adams and Allen Lazard (illness) out in Week 8 against Arizona with three catches for 15 yards and two touchdowns on five targets. With both expected back this week, it’s time to put Cobb back on the waiver wire. He scored five PPR points or less in six of his first seven games prior to Week 8. … Anderson has scored 10 PPR points or less in every game since Week 1 and just had no catches in Week 8 at Atlanta on one target. He was banged up against the Falcons but returned to the game, and he should be fine in Week 9 against New England. That said, his lack of production is making him useless as a Fantasy option, and he should be dropped in all leagues. … Shenault has three games this season with at least 11 PPR points and four games with eight PPR points or less. He hasn’t scored a touchdown yet and is losing targets to Jamal Agnew and Dan Arnold. There’s no reason to hold onto Shenault, especially heading into Week 9 against Buffalo.

Wide receiver

Week 9 Priority List

  • Injuries: George Kittle (calf), Darren Waller (ankle), Rob Gronkowski (back), Dawson Knox (hand), Robert Tonyan (ACL) and Logan Thomas (hamstring).
  • On a bye: T.J. Hockenson, Rob Gronkowski, Ricky Seals-Jones and Gerald Everett

  • Check to see if available: C.J. Uzomah (82 percent rostered) and Dawson Knox (75 percent). Uzomah failed to score against the Jets in Week 8, but he’s still worth a look in non-PPR leagues in Week 9 against the Browns. Cleveland just allowed a touchdown to Pat Freiermuth in Week 8, and Uzomah has three touchdowns in his past three games. … Knox will hopefully return to action in Week 9 against the Jaguars following his hand injury, but if not, he should be back in Week 10. When healthy, he’ll be a No. 1 Fantasy tight end again after he scored a touchdown in four of the six games he’s played this year.

  • Drop candidates: Robert Tonyan (68 percent rostered) and Ricky Seals-Jones (48 percent). Tonyan is done for the season so there’s no reason to stash him. … Seals-Jones is on a bye in Week 9, and Thomas could return in Week 10 to resume his role as the No. 1 tight end in Washington.

Add in this order:

Tight End

Week 9 Priority List

  • Patriots (68 percent rostered) at CAR

Saints (66 percent rostered) vs. ATL

Ravens (58 percent rostered) vs. MIN

Dolphins (28 percent rostered) vs. HOU

Raiders (22 percent rostered) at NYG

  • Mike Badgley (13 percent rostered) vs. NYJ

Daniel Carlson (37 percent rostered) at NYG

Greg Joseph (65 percent rostered) at BAL

Brian Johnson (2 percent rostered) vs. ATL
