Packers become third team in 55 years to pull off this rare feat; previous two teams won Super Bowl

Packers become third team in 55 years to pull off this rare feat; previous two teams won Super Bowl

The Packers season got off to an ugly start when they got absolutely destroyed, 38-3, by the Saints back in Week 1. After an offseason of drama involving Aaron Rodgers, the tension quickly mounted in Green Bay following the 35-point loss.

Of course, that defeat now seems like it was forever ago because the Packers haven’t lost a single game since then. The Packers responded to the loss by winning seven straight, which is currently the longest winning streak in the NFL

There have been plenty of seven-game winning streaks in NFL history, but not many teams have been able to do what the Packers have done this season: Following their win over Arizona, the Packers became just the third team in the Super Bowl era to win seven straight games following a loss of 30 points or more, according to ESPN Stats and Info. That’s three teams over 55 years, which tells you how rare it is to pull off this feat.

The most interesting part of this stat for the Packers is that the previous two teams that pulled off this feat ended up winning the Super Bowl.

The first team to win at least seven straight games after a loss of 30 points or more was the 1976 Raiders. After a 48-17 loss to the Patriots in Week 4, the Raiders responded by not losing a game for the rest of the season. Not only did they reel off 10 straight wins to finish the regular season, but they also tacked on three more playoff wins, including a 32-14 victory over the Vikings in Super Bowl XI. The Super Bowl win marked the first and only Lombardi Trophy that the Raiders would win with John Madden as their head coach. Including the playoffs, the Raiders finished the year 16-1, which means the blowout loss was the only blemish on their record that season.

During their run to the Super Bowl, the Raiders were also able to get revenge on the Patriots by beating them, 24-21, in the divisional round, which seems notable since it’s easy to envision a situation where the Packers might have a chance to get revenge on the Saints in the playoffs this year.

The other team to win at least seven straight games after a loss of 30 points or more was the 1994 San Francisco 49ers. Following a 40-8 loss to the Eagles in Week 5, the 49ers bounced back with a 10-game winning streak before losing their regular season finale. In the playoffs, the 49ers coasted to a Super Bowl win with three postseason victories that all came by double digits.

The other upside to the Packers’ 38-3 loss to New Orleans is that the last time the Saints beat a team 38-3, that team ended up winning it all.

The Packers might not win the Super Bowl this year, but right now, history is certainly on their side.
