Florida State’s Chubba Purdy enters transfer portal as former blue-chip recruit joins stacked QB group

Florida State’s Chubba Purdy enters transfer portal as former blue-chip recruit joins stacked QB group

Former blue-chip recruit Florida State quarterback Chubba Purdy has entered the transfer portal after two seasons with the program, becoming the latest high-profile signal-caller to enter the transfer portal in 2021.

“I want to thank the Seminole fans and Florida State community for all their support during my time at Florida State,” Purdy wrote in a note on his Twitter account. “After careful consideration and a discussion with my family I will be moving on towards new beginnings.”

Many around Florida State thought Purdy could push for the starting job as a true freshman in 2020, especially with the issues the Seminoles had at the position. However, he suffered a broken collarbone before the season even began underwent multiple procedures over the last two years. In his lone start against NC State in 2020, Purdy threw for 181 yards and 2 touchdowns in a 38-22 loss.

Purdy ranked among the best recruits in Mike Norvell’s first recruiting class at Florida State. The 247Sports Composite listed Purdy as the No. 192 player nationally and No. 7 dual-thread quarterback, ahead of talented players like Florida’s Anthony Richardson, Georgia Tech’s Jeff Sims and now-Orlando Magic point guard Jalen Suggs.

With his decision, Purdy becomes the latest high-profile quarterback to enter the transfer portal in the middle of 2021. Experienced starters Charlie Brewer from Utah, Myles Brennan from LSU and Tommy DeVito from Syracuse all entered in the past two months. Notable underclassmen Jacob Zeno from Baylor and 2020 top-100 recruit Harrison Bailey from Tennessee are also on the market.

In the class of 2020 alone, Purdy becomes the fourth quarterback among the top 13 to enter the transfer portal. Along with Bailey, Ethan Garbers transferred from Washington to UCLA and Ja’Quinden Jackson transferred from Texas to Utah.

But there is light at the end of the tunnel. At least one transfer starting quarterback has started in five of the last six College Football Playoffs. Most recently, Georgia transfer Justin Fields led Ohio State to the national championship game in 2020-21.

If the name Purdy sounds familiar to you, it should. Chubba’s brother is Iowa State starting quarterback Brock Purdy. While Chubba was a substantially higher-rated recruit, Brock also had offers from schools like Texas A&M and Alabama before landing in Ames, Iowa, to start his productive career.

While Iowa State already has a quarterback of the future – Hunter Dekkers – the younger Purdy might also look for fit over profile in his second go-round. Purdy is an Arizona native, but also picked Florida State over Louisville. He had offers from numerous West Coast schools when he committed to FSU.
