Virginia Tech vs. Boston College odds: 2021 college football picks, Week 10 predictions from proven model

The Virginia Tech Hokies and Boston College Eagles are both trying to find their footing as they meet Friday night in a cross-division ACC matchup at BC Alumni Stadium. The Hokies (4-4, 2-2 ACC) beat Georgia Tech 26-17 last Saturday to halt a three-game losing skid. The Eagles (4-4, 0-4) have lost four straight, including a 21-6 setback to Syracuse last weekend. Virginia Tech has an outside chance of getting back in the Coastal Division race as it sits a game behind Pittsburgh, but it lost to the Panthers 28-7 three weeks ago. BC is last in the Atlantic Division. Both teams bank on running the ball and playing defense, with both yielding fewer than 23 points per game.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET in Chestnut Hill, Mass. The Hokies are three-point favorites in the latest Virginia Tech vs. Boston College odds from Caesars Sportsbook, while the over-under for total points scored is 47. Why the Hokies can cover

Virginia Tech is 22-25 against the spread in ACC games under coach Justin Fuente (since 2016), and it will try to get the running game going. The Eagles allow 173 yards per game on the ground (90th in FBS), and the Hokies have a pair of strong running backs in Raheem Blackshear and Malachi Thomas. They have combined for 660 yards and seven TDs, and Thomas ran for 103 yards in last week’s win, while Blackshear averaged 5.9 yards per carry. Receiver Tre Turner had 187 receiving yards (26.7 per reception) against the Yellow Jackets.

Quarterback Braxton Burmeister is completing just 54 percent of his throws but has 1,485 yards, with nine TDs and just three interceptions. He also can count on possession receiver Tayvion Robinson, who has 31 catches and four TDs. Burmeister also is a threat to run, putting up 272 yards on the ground. The Hokies defense is stingy against the pass, allowing 200.5 yards per game (34th in FBS), and the unit has 19 sacks and 10 takeaways. BC quarterback Dennis Grosel has more interceptions (seven) than TD passes (six) and the Eagles have 12 turnovers.

Why the Eagles can cover

The home team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings, and the BC defense gives up fewer than 21 points per game and ranks 11th in the nation against the pass (174 yards per game). It also has 12 takeaways, with Brandon Sebastian (three interceptions) and Josh DeBerry (two) leading an opportunistic secondary. Khris Banks and Marcus Valdez both had sacks last week and will get after Burmeister, who has been sacked 19 times this season. Kam Arnold, part of a stout linebacking corps also had a sack against Syracuse and has 36 tackles and a fumble recovery.

Running back Pat Garwo III (689 yards, five TDs) is the focal point of the offense as Grosel has struggled. The Hokies allow 178 rushing yards per game (95th in FBS), so the sophomore, who averages 5.9 yards per carry, should find holes. Wideout Zay Flowers (511 yards, 14.6 per catch) and tight end Trae Berry (288, 16 per reception) give Grosel strong options in the passing game. While the Hokies allow just 200.5 passing yards per contest (34th in FBS), they could be caught focusing on the running game to open up a big play for Flowers.
