Why Alabama can cover
The Crimson Tide have rolled to blowout wins over the Tigers in two of the past three seasons, including a 55-17 win last year in Baton Rouge, La. Sophomore quarterback Bryce Young powers the Alabama offense and leads the team in passing. He has completed 187 of 267 passes (70 percent) for 2,453 yards and 26 touchdowns. He has been intercepted three times and has a rating of 177.1. Young has also rushed for two scores. Prior to last week’s bye, he was 31-for-43 (72.1 percent) for 371 yards and two touchdowns against Tennessee. He also carried 10 times for 42 yards and two TDs.
Junior wide receiver Jameson Williams is also having a solid season with 35 receptions for a team-high 710 yards (20.3 average) and six touchdowns. His best game was a 10-catch, 146-yard and two TD performance against Texas A&M. In the Tide’s last game against Tennessee, he had six receptions for 123 yards. He is the first Alabama receiver since Amari Cooper in 2014 with at least three 70-plus yard receptions in a single season.
Why LSU can cover
Despite that, the Crimson Tide are not a lock to cover the LSU vs. Alabama spread. That’s because the Tigers have had success against Nick Saban-coached teams, winning five times in 16 tries, including a 46-41 win in 2019. Sophomore quarterback Max Johnson runs the LSU offense, and has completed 162 of 264 passes (61.4 percent) for 2,009 yards and 20 touchdowns. He has been picked off five times and has a rating of 146.5.
Since losing his top target — sophomore wide receiver Kayshon Boutte — to a leg injury, senior wide receiver Jaray Jenkins has stepped up his play. He was the leading receiver against both Florida and Ole Miss and combined for eight catches for 102 yards in those two games. He had four catches for a team-high 52 yards against Ole Miss, and a career-best three touchdowns in the 49-42 win over the 20th-ranked Gators. In eight games this year, Jenkins has 18 receptions for 222 yards and three scores.
