What to Know

The Old Dominion Monarchs have enjoyed the comforts of home their last two games, but now they must head out on the road. The Monarchs and the FIU Panthers will face off in a Conference USA battle at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday at Riccardo Silva Stadium. Coming off of a win even when the odds were against them, Old Dominion has to be feeling especially confident now that the spread is in their favor.

It was all tied up 10-10 at the half for Old Dominion and the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs last week, but Old Dominion stepped up in the second half for a 23-20 win. No one had a standout game offensively for Old Dominion, but TE Zack Kuntz led the way with one touchdown.

Special teams collected 11 points for Old Dominion. K Nick Rice booted in three field goals, the longest a 46-yarder in the fourth quarter, which ultimately accounted for the difference in the game. One of the most memorable scores? A 100-yard kickoff return for touchdown from CB LaMareon James in the second quarter.

Meanwhile, a victory for FIU just wasn’t in the stars last week as the team never even grasped a temporary lead. They were pulverized by the Marshall Thundering Herd 38 to nothing. The Panthers were in a tough position by the half, with the score already sitting at 24 to nothing. QB Max Bortenschlager had a memorable game, but not in the way you want to be remembered: besides failing to produce a single touchdown, he threw one interception with only 128 yards passing.

The Monarchs’ win brought them up to 2-6 while FIU’s loss pulled them down to 1-7. A pair of defensive numbers to keep in mind before kickoff: Old Dominion is stumbling into the matchup with the 243rd most passing touchdowns allowed in the nation, having given up 18 on the season. FIUs have had an even harder time: they are 239th worst in the nation in passing touchdowns allowed, with 17 on the season. It’s possible one of these Achilles’ heels will wind up tripping the losing team up.
