What you need to know about the Mavericks

Dallas skirted by the Boston Celtics 107-104 this past Saturday thanks to a clutch deep three from point guard Luka Doncic as the clock expired. Dallas can attribute much of its success to Doncic, who shot 5-for-10 from beyond the arc and finished with 33 points, five assists and nine boards, while Kristaps Porzingis had 21 points along with seven rebounds.

Despite the win, Dallas is uncharacteristically struggling on the offensive end of the court under coach Jason Kidd. The Mavs rank among the bottom five in field goal percentage, three-point percentage and free throw percentage, which has led to them ranking just 25th in points per game. Dallas may have an even tougher go of it on Monday as it will be without forward Maxi Kleber (oblique) who leads the team with a 47.8 three-point percentage.

What you need to know about the Pelicans

Meanwhile, New Orleans’ and the Golden State Warriors‘ game this past Friday was up for grabs at halftime, but New Orleans was thoroughly outmatched 72-35 in the second half. The Pelicans were completely outmatched by the Dubs on the road and fell 126-85. New Orleans was down 88-66 at the end of the third quarter, which was just too much to recover from. One thing holding New Orleans back was the mediocre play of shooting guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker, who did not have his best game: he played for 28 minutes but put up just eight points on 3-for-11 shooting.

New Orleans will be shorthanded on Monday as Zion Williamson (foot) is out as he recovers from foot surgery. Also, the team’s leading scorer in Brandon Ingram is questionable with a hip injury and has missed the last four games. Ingram being out will force the team to rely more on new addition Jonas Valanciunas who is averaging 19.3 points, 14.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists in his first year in New Orleans.
