What you need to know about Iowa

After scoring just 14 points in two combined games against Purdue and Wisconsin in back-to-back losses, Iowa got back on track last week in a 17-12 win over Northwestern. Running back Tyler Goodson rushed for a touchdown and 141 yards on 21 carries. Alex Padilla was the team’s primary quarterback after Spencer Petras was ineffective in Iowa’s losses, but Padilla didn’t exactly light up the Wildcats defense. He finished with 172 yards and completed 64 percent of his passes.

The Hawkeyes’ success this season has been primarily due to its defense. Iowa has the seventh-best rush defense in the nation, and allows just 98 rushing yards per game. Iowa’s pass defense has been strong as well, and has given up just 206 yards per game, but leads the country in interceptions with 19.

What you need to know about Minnesota

Minnesota came up short against Illinois on Saturday, losing 14-6. Gophers QB Tanner Morgan threw a touchdown, but he also tossed two interceptions on just 180 yards passing. Things don’t figure to get much better this week against Iowa’s top-rated defense, and Minnesota has one of the worst passing offenses in the nation. Morgan has thrown all but two of the team’s passes this season and has completed less than 60 percent of them with just six touchdowns and seven picks.

Minnesota’s rushing offense has been much more productive, led by Treyson Potts, who has 552 yards this season. Minnesota has two other backs that have averaged more than five yards per carry in Ky Thomas, who has 394 yards on the season, and Mar’Keise Irving, who has 381. Minnesota’s pass defense has been tough as well, and has allowed fewer than 200 yards per game in 2021. Senior defensive lineman Boye Mafe leads the defense with six sacks in 2021.
