Who’s Playing
Grambling @ New Mexico
Current Records: Grambling 0-2; New Mexico 1-1
What to Know
The New Mexico Lobos will take on the Grambling Tigers at 9 p.m. ET on Monday at The Pit. Given that these two teams suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this game.
The Lobos ended up a good deal behind the Colorado Buffaloes when they played this past Saturday, losing 87-76. Despite the defeat, New Mexico had strong showings from guard Jaelen House, who had 22 points, and guard Taryn Todd, who had 12 points along with seven steals. Todd’s performance made up for a slower matchup against the Florida Atlantic Owls last Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Grambling was expected to have a tough go of it this past Friday, and that’s exactly how things played out. Their bruising 88-62 loss to the Texas Tech Red Raiders might stick with them for a while. A silver lining for the Tigers was the play of Danya Kingsby, who had 22 points.
The Lobos are the favorite in this one, with an expected 12-point margin of victory. They hadn’t treated fans well this season, but they at least enjoy a 2-0 record against the spread.
The losses put New Mexico at 1-1 and Grambling at 0-2. Two last-season numbers to keep in mind before tip-off: New Mexico is 349th worst in college basketball in points allowed per game, with 71.7 on average. But the Tigers are stumbling into the contest with the 16th fewest points per game in college basketball, having accrued only 67.4 on average. It’s possible one of these Achilles’ heels will wind up tripping the losing team up.
