Seahawks’ Russell Wilson wants to play 20 years or more, then become an NFL owner

Seahawks’ Russell Wilson wants to play 20 years or more, then become an NFL owner

This past offseason was dominated by quarterback headlines, including the future of Russell Wilson with the Seattle Seahawks. But after weeks of speculation and his agent reportedly handing over a short list of teams he’d waive his no-trade clause for, Wilson doubled down on wanting to remain in the Pacific Northwest. Fast forward to now and the Seahawks are 3-6 as the Pro Bowl quarterback tries to find his groove after missing several games with a fractured finger, and it remains unclear just how long Wilson will remain in Seattle (post-2021), but what is clear is how long he wants to play football.

If you think Tom Brady is defying Father Time (he is), get ready for Wilson to attempt the same feat. Sitting out three games in 2021 only served to further fuel his mission of being under center for a very, very long time to come.

“I knew I was wildly crazy about the game, but I’m ridiculously obsessed with it,” he told told The Associated Press. “That’s why I want to play 20-plus years. I think the other part that you learn about yourself is to have patience. At the same time, you have to have drive.

“I think that’s such a critical part. The third thing is [having] unrelenting confidence. You don’t want to mistake that with arrogance. It’s strictly confidence in what you do and how you do it and you’ve done it before, and we’ll do it again and with great faith, all things are possible, and that’s really what’s been very evident to me in my journey.”

Furthermore, once he’s done playing, his aspirations of remaining in the league won’t travel the usual route of broadcasting and/or coaching — not if Wilson has anything to say about it. Not to say those may not be in play, but he has much bigger aspirations.

“I definitely want to play for a long time, but I think once I’m done, I’d love to own an NFL football team and to be able to impact a city, a country and just bring people to the game of football,” Wilson added. “I’m very big into the business side of things and just sports in general. I love winning. I love the process of winning.

“So hopefully I can bring that culture to a team and organization.”

Of course, all of this is for later because, right now, his sole focus has to be on helping save the Seahawks in 2021, and time is quickly running out on that dream.
