Who’s Playing
Ole Miss @ Elon
Current Records: Ole Miss 2-2; Elon 2-3
What to Know
The Elon Phoenix will square off against the Ole Miss Rebels at 9 p.m. ET on Friday at TD Arena. Given that both teams suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this game.
On Thursday, Elon lost to the West Virginia Mountaineers by a decisive 87-68 margin. Five players on the Phoenix scored in the double digits: guard Torrence Watson (15), guard Hunter McIntosh (13), guard Darius Burford (12), guard Hunter Woods (11), and guard Zac Ervin (11).
Meanwhile, Ole Miss was within striking distance but couldn’t close the gap on Thursday as they fell 78-72 to the Marquette Golden Eagles. Despite the defeat, the Rebels got a solid performance out of center Nysier Brooks, who had 13 points in addition to seven rebounds. Brooks hadn’t helped his team much against the Charleston Southern Buccaneers last Friday, so this was a nice turnaround for him.
Elon is the clear underdog, so they’re hoping it’s the size of the fight that determines this one. Those burned by picking them against the spread on Thursday might want to keep in mind that the squad has not yet dropped back-to-back games against the spread this season.
The losses put Elon at 2-3 and Ole Miss at 2-2. Two stats to keep in the back of your head while watching: The Phoenix are stumbling into the contest with the 25th fewest takeaways in college basketball, having accrued only 10.5 on average. To make matters even worse for Elon, the Rebels rank 28th in college basketball when it comes to turnovers per game, with only ten on average. So the cards are definitely stacked in Ole Miss’ favor.
