The Houston Texans stunned the NFL after upsetting the AFC’s current No. 1 seed in the Tennessee Titans in Week 11 and now have another surprising move up their sleeve. As CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reported Tuesday, the club has decided to cut veteran running back Phillip Lindsay. This puts an end to a rather brief stint for Lindsay in Houston after he signed with the team this past offseason.

The 27-year old initially became a restricted free agent last spring after spending the first three seasons of his career with the Denver Broncos. A few days after free agency opened, Denver rescinded its right to first refusal on Lindsay, which then freed him up as an unrestricted free agent and eventually led to a deal with Houston.

While Lindsay has been a productive back throughout his short career (Pro Bowler in 2018), his stint with the Texans wasn’t as fruitful as both parties likely hoped. In a crowded backfield that consisted of David Jonson, Rex Burkhead, Mark Ingram (now with Saints) and Lindsay, the former undrafted free agent out of Colorado played in just 16.48% of the Texans offensive snaps this season.

Lindsay will now but subject to waivers, and if he clears he would become an unrestricted free agent. La Canfora notes that Lindsay was a popular name around the trade deadline — the Baltimore Ravens inquired — and he expects many teams to be interested in him, so it seems possible he could be claimed off waivers.
