Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young got a vote for New York mayor and was flattered by the citizen’s trust in his potential. Young was one of many — mostly New York-based — athletes to receive a write-in vote in the election.
After learning of the vote, Young tweeted:
“That’s Love NY❤️ for real..Never got a mayor vote ! 🤷🏽♂️❄️.”
Young can add “receiving a vote for New York mayor” to his ever-growing resume along with NBA All-Star and NBA All-Rookie First Team.
To get the vote, Young didn’t even have to run a campaign, though many are joking when it comes to basketball he owns New York. If he were to run, maybe Hawks head coach Nate McMillan would be his campaign manager, Bogdan Bogdanovic would be his marketing manager and Clint Capela would be in charge of youth outreach. Just giving Young some ideas in case he ever decides to run.
Young does not live in New York, but has some history in the city. Last season, the New York Knicks and Hawks met in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. The series went to five games and ended with a Hawks 4-1 victory on the series. The games were close and Young lead the series for his team with 29.2 points per game and 2.8 rebounds per game.
Young will pay a visit to the city that typically is not a big fan of him on Christmas Day when the Hawks head to Madison Square Garden to face the Knicks.
Other athletes that received votes in the election were Yankees Aaron Judge, Aaron Hicks and Brett Gardner as well as Mets players Jacob deGrom and Pete Alonso.
