Why the Hawks can cover

Atlanta has a budding superstar in point guard Trae Young. Young has posted back-to-back 33-point games as well as double-doubles against the Pacers and Knicks, and has scored 30 or more points in five consecutive games. Young also has 11 double-doubles on the season, including a 13-point and 10-assist effort against Philadelphia in their last meeting. In 22 games this season, Young averages 26.3 points, 9.1 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game.

Power forward John Collins has also been a force for the Hawks. He is averaging 16.5 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.4 blocks. Collins has reached double-digit scoring in 10 consecutive games, including four of 20 or more points. He has five double-doubles on the season and is coming off a 14-point performance in the 114-111 win over Indiana.

Why the 76ers can cover

Despite that, Atlanta isn’t a lock to cover the 76ers vs. Hawks spread. That’s because Philadelphia has six players averaging double figures and seven averaging at least nine points. Center Joel Embiid, who missed some time recently, has made a big impact in his return. He scored 42 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in a 121-120 double-overtime loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday, and has recorded four consecutive double-doubles. In Wednesday’s 88-87 loss at Boston, Embiid scored 13 points and grabbed 18 rebounds.

Also back from injury and making his presence felt is power forward Tobias Harris. In 14 games played, Harris is averaging 19.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists. He is connecting on 47.6 percent of his field goals and 82.9 percent of his free throws. He has reached double figures in all but one game this season, including a 32-point, 11-rebound performance at Indiana on Nov. 13.
