The Colts could turn to one of the best players in franchise history to fill a vacancy on their staff in 2022. After Mike Groh’s departure as wide receivers coach this offseason, Indianapolis is “strongly considering” retired star receiver Reggie Wayne for the same position, according to The Athletic’s Zak Keefer. Nothing has been finalized between the two sides, Keefer reported Friday, but Wayne is in the mix as a potential big-name addition under Frank Reich.
Groh became the Colts’ WRs coach in 2020 after serving as the Eagles‘ offensive coordinator. He left his post this offseason, however, to take the same position with the Giants, under new coach Brian Daboll. Indy’s WRs coaching job is the last remaining vacancy on Reich’s staff entering the new year.
Wayne, meanwhile, would be making his coaching debut in the event he’s hired. The Hall of Fame nominee spent his entire 14-year NFL career playing for the Colts, from 2001-14. A first-round pick out of Miami, he ranks second all time among the Colts’ career leaders in catches (1,070), receiving yards (14,345) and touchdowns (82), behind only Marvin Harrison. An eight-time 1,000-yard receiver and one of Peyton Manning’s favorite targets during a stretch that included four AFC Championship appearances and one Super Bowl championship, Wayne retired in 2015 with the 10th-most catches in NFL history.
