It will be an old-fashioned test for the PGA Tour’s top golfers when the 2022 U.S. Open tees off Thursday, June 16 at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. One shocking choice from Johnson: He is fading Viktor Hovland, even though the Norwegian is among the top 10 players in the world. He is priced at 22-1 at Caesars and has six worldwide wins at age 24. He has missed one cut this season and finished outside the top 50 once. But the latter came in his most recent event, the Memorial, and he hasn’t finished in the top 10 since March. He also has failed to crack the top 10 in his first 10 majors. Hovland is strong off the tee, on approach and putting, but has been horrible around the green (202nd in strokes gained).
On the other hand, Johnson knows Scheffler will want to make up for laying an egg in the PGA Championship on the heels of his Masters victory. He won by three shots at Augusta, but missed the cut in his next major championship last month. Scheffler rebounded to make a playoff the following week at the Charles Schwab, losing to Sam Burns. The 25-year-old leads the FedEx Cup and has shown his stellar all-around game since getting his first PGA Tour win at Phoenix in February. He ranks second in greens in regulation and averages 4.8 birdies per round (third).
The expert also is aware that Spieth has four top-10s in 15 events this season, but three have come in his past five starts. That includes a win at the RBC Heritage and a runner-up in his next event at the Byron Nelson Classic. He tied for 34th in the last major, last month’s PGA Championship, and missed the cut at the Masters. He is in the top 25 on tour in every strokes gained category aside from putting, where he ranks 149th.
