2022 British Open odds: Surprising PGA picks, golf predictions by top model that nailed the Masters

2022 British Open odds: Surprising PGA picks, golf predictions by top model that nailed the Masters

Scotland is known as the birthplace of golf, and the sport will return home for the 2022 Open Championship. The tournament begins on Thursday, July 14 from the Old Course at St Andrews, which is considered the world’s oldest golf course and was established in 1552. This will mark the 30th time St Andrews will host the British Open, with past winners at the course including Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, who each won twice on these links. Golfers in the 2022 Open Championship field who have won this event at other courses include Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth, and defending champion Collin Morikawa.

Rory McIlroy won this tournament in 2014 and is the 9-1 favorite according to Caesars Sportsbook. Jon Rahm is 11-1 in the latest 2022 Open Championship odds, while the year’s first three major winners are also high. Masters winner Scottie Scheffler is 12-1, PGA champion Justin Thomas comes in at 14-1, and U.S. Open victor Matthew Fitzpatrick is 20-1. Before locking in your 2022 Open Championship picks or entering any PGA DFS tournaments on sites like DraftKings and FanDuel, be sure to see the PGA Tour predictions and betting advice from SportsLine’s proven golf model

SportsLine’s proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, it’s up over $9,500 on its best bets since that point, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure’s model included Thomas in its best bets to win the 2022 PGA Championship. That bet hit at +1600, and for the entire tournament, McClure’s best bets returned almost $800. At the 2022 Masters, McClure’s model was all over Scheffler’s first career major championship victory heading into the weekend.

In addition, McClure’s best bets included Collin Morikawa winning outright at the 2021 Open Championship, even though he was a massive 40-1 long shot. The model was also all over Rahm’s (10-1) first career major championship victory at the 2021 U.S. Open. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the weekend, but the model still projected him as the winner.

This same model has also nailed a whopping eight majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the 2022 British Open golf tournament is approaching, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.

Top 2022 Open Championship predictions

One huge shocker the model is calling for at the Open Championship 2022: Collin Morikawa (18-1), the defending British Open champion and one of the tournament favorites, stumbles and doesn’t even crack the top five. Morikawa had fifth-place finishes at the U.S. Open and Masters, but he was nowhere to be found on the leaderboard at the PGA Championship, finishing outside the top 50.

Last year’s Open Championship remains Morikawa’s last victory, and while he started this tour season with five straight top-10s, success has been fleeting since then. Over his last 10 tournaments, he has more finishes outside the top 50 (four) than he has inside the top 10 (three). His biggest culprit has been his short game, which has gone from above average to among the tour’s worst. He ranks 180th out of 204 players on tour in strokes gained: around-the-green (-.307), and that weakness could be magnified at a course with over 100 bunkers.

Another surprise: Shane Lowry, a 22-1 long shot, makes a strong run at the title. He’s a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. The 2019 British Open winner didn’t get a chance to defend his title in 2020 due to the Open Championship being cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but he notched a 12th-place finish last year. This season, he’s been consistent in events on the PGA Tour and European Tour, with 11 top-25s over his past 14 tournaments.

Lowry has no holes in his game, as he ranks in the top quartile in the strokes gained off the tee, tee to green, approach the green and putting. His strength is his long game, as his approach shots have an average proximity to the hole of 33 feet, 1 inch, which is the best on the PGA Tour. That sets him up for numerous birdie opportunities and he’s taking advantage of those, as he has the sixth-lowest scoring average (69.358) in the world. The Irishman has already lifted the Claret Jug once before and one shouldn’t rule him out in their 2022 Open Championship bets to do it again. See who else to pick here.

How to make 2022 Open Championship picks

The model is targeting two other golfers with odds of 22-1 or longer who will make surprising runs. Anyone who backs these long shots could hit it big. You can only see the model’s picks here.
