2022 British Open odds: Surprising PGA picks, golf predictions from analytics model that nailed the Masters

2022 British Open odds: Surprising PGA picks, golf predictions from analytics model that nailed the Masters

The 2022 Open Championship will begin Thursday on the Old Course at St. Andrews. Xander Schauffele enters the 150th British Open having surpassed world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler as the hottest player on the planet. Schauffele ended a nearly three-year winless drought with a team win alongside Patrick Cantlay at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and then won the Travelers Championship late last month and the Scottish Open last week. The wins in his last two starts have vaulted him all the way from No. 15 in the Official World Golf Ranking to No. 5 and now he’s set his sights on the Claret Jug in the Open Championship 2022.

Schauffele was the runner-up at the 2018 British Open and is 14-1 in the latest 2022 Open Championship odds from Caesars Sportsbook. Rory McIlroy is the 9-1 favorite in his return to the Old Course for the 2022 British Open. Before locking in your 2022 Open Championship picks or entering any PGA DFS tournaments on sites like DraftKings and FanDuel, be sure to see the PGA Tour predictions and betting advice from SportsLine’s proven golf model

SportsLine’s proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, it’s up over $9,500 on its best bets since that point, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure’s model included Thomas in its best bets to win the 2022 PGA Championship. That bet hit at +1600, and for the entire tournament, McClure’s best bets returned almost $800. At the 2022 Masters, McClure’s model was all over Scheffler’s first career major championship victory heading into the weekend.

In addition, McClure’s best bets included Collin Morikawa winning outright at the 2021 Open Championship, even though he was a massive 40-1 long shot. The model was also all over Rahm’s (10-1) first career major championship victory at the 2021 U.S. Open. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the weekend, but the model still projected him as the winner.

This same model has also nailed a whopping eight majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the 2022 British Open golf tournament is approaching, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.

Top 2022 Open Championship predictions

One huge shocker the model is calling for at the Open Championship 2022: Rory McIlroy, the 2022 British Open favorite at 9-1, falls short of winning it all and barely finishes inside the top three. The 31-year old Northern Irishman has 35 combined wins on the PGA and European Tours and three major championships. He won the Open Championship in 2014 and finished third when it was held at St. Andrews in 2010.

He’s been contending in majors on a regular basis, but inconsistent play continues to cost him titles. In the three majors this season, he’s shot at least one round of 67 or lower, but he’s also had at least one round of 73 or higher. The model is calling for him to fall short again, making him one of the favorites to fade in 2022 British Open bets.

Another surprise: Shane Lowry, a 22-1 long shot, makes a strong run at the title. He’s a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Lowry bottomed out at No. 49 in the Official World Golf Ranking early in 2022, but he’s put together a spectacular season to climb all the way back to No. 22 heading into the Open Championship 2022 and we know he has an affinity for links golf.

The 2019 British Open winner at Royal Portrush also won the Irish Open as an amateur in 2009 when he was only 22 and is coming off a ninth finish at the Irish Open this year as he prepped for St. Andrews. Lowry has only missed one cut in 2022 and been top-15 in nine of his 14 starts, including a third-place finish at the Masters. He ranks eighth on tour in total strokes gained per round (1.615) and has a well-rounded game with experience on links courses, which should make him a factor this week. See who else to pick here.

How to make 2022 Open Championship picks

The model is targeting three other golfers with odds of 22-1 or longer who will make surprising runs. Anyone who backs these long shots could hit it big. You can only see the model’s picks here.
