At numerous media appearances this week, the boxers expressed mutual respect and seemingly went out of their way to avoid a war of words.
Even so, when pressed on why he would emerge victorious, Alvarez (59-2-2, 39 KOs) said the deciding factor is that he has simply faced better competition and has a superior skill set compared to Charlo.
“When you love what you do, that’s what it’s all about. He’s a great fighter. It’s not for nothing that he’s the undisputed champion at 154,” Alvarez said. “Now, I have the opportunity to show him why I’m at the top. He knows how to box. He’s strong, he counter-punches fast. Charlo (35-1-1, 19 KOs) is a decisive betting underdog in large part because he’s moving up two weight divisions to face a naturally larger opponent in Alvarez. Charlo also hasn’t fought in 16 months in large part because he has been hampered by a hand injury.

Alvarez himself did it in November 2019 when he moved up to light heavyweight to face former WBO champion Sergey Kovalev.
