What to Know
We’ve got another exciting Coastal Athletic matchup on schedule as the Northeastern Huskies and the Monmouth Hawks are set to tip at 7:00 p.m. ET on January 8th at OceanFirst Bank Center. Neither of these teams found much success offensively their last time out, scoring well below their season average.
The point spread may have favored Northeastern on Thursday, but the final result did not. They opened the new year with a less-than-successful 62-53 loss to the Seawolves. The result shouldn’t come as a shock considering that’s the fewest points Northeastern has scored all season.
Northeastern’s loss shouldn’t obscure the performances of Chris Doherty, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 12 rebounds, and Masai Troutman who scored 16 points along with nine rebounds. Those 12 rebounds set a new season-high mark for him.
Meanwhile, the Hawks were able to grind out a solid win over the Tigers on Thursday, taking the game 51-43.
Monmouth can attribute much of their success to Xander Rice, who scored 21 points. Less helpful for Monmouth was Jack Collins’ abysmal 0-6 three-point shooting.
The Huskies have traveled a rocky road recently, as they’ve lost four of their last five contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-9 record this season. As for the Hawks, they pushed their record up to 8-6 with that win, which was their fifth straight at home.
Northeastern strolled past Monmouth when the teams last played back in February of 2023 by a score of 77-62. The rematch might be a little tougher for Northeastern since the team won’t have the home-court advantage this time around. We’ll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
