The 2024 Paris Olympics are underway with the opening ceremony set to be held Friday afternoon before competition picks up in earnest early Saturday morning. The United States enters these games with the most Olympic medals ever won in the Summer Games. The U.S. medal count stands at 2,629 total, 1,061 of which have been gold. In fact, the Americans have placed first overall 18 times when it comes to medal count at the Summer Olympics.
Great Britain is third with 916 total medals, while 2024 host country France holds the fourth-most medals with 751. Each nation has led the medal count at the conclusion of a Summer Olympics one time, and certainly this year, the French are hoping for a record performance over the next three weeks to top the Americans and narrow the gap with their European friends.
The U.S. holds the record for most gold medals won in a single games with 83 captured in 1984, and it is seeking to put up even more successful numbers than it achieved three years ago at the 2020 London Olympics when Americans brought home 39 gold medals, 41 silvers and 33 bronze.
While the United States is again favored to lead 2024 Paris Olympics medal count, it will face the toughest competition possible to that end with the best of the best from every nation set to compete in France. Every athlete over the next few weeks will be seeking to achieve individual success while honoring their respective countries.
