The outlook for the 2024 Fresno State Bulldogs changed drastically when head coach Jeff Tedford stepped down due to ongoing health issues. In five seasons on the job during two separate stints, Tedford led the Bulldogs to a 45-22 overall record (27-13 in conference play), three Mountain West West division titles, two Mountain West Conference titles, and four bowl games (all wins). Prior to Tedford stepping down, media members had picked Fresno State to finish third in the Mountain West behind Boise State and UNLV. The Bulldogs did get four first place votes from media members covering the conference.
Assistant head coach/linebackers coach Tim Skipper was promoted to interim head Fresno State football coach by new athletics director Garrett Klassy. Skipper will have the chance to earn the full-time job at his alma mater, but Klassy is still expected to do his homework on external Fresno State football coaching candidates throughout the fall. Top Fresno State coach candidates
One name the BarkBoard staff has identified as a potential target if Skipper doesn’t keep the job long term is Arizona State offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo. The 44-year-old coach has deep ties to the Mountain West Conference and the West Coast stemming from his career as a standout quarterback at San Jose State and then assistant coach at SJSU, Cal, and Oregon. Arroyo also has head coaching experience, albeit somewhat unsuccessful experience, from his time at UNLV on his resume.
Arroyo is considered an elite recruiter and one of the top offensive minds on the West Coast. After spending a season out of football after losing his job at UNLV, Arroyo landed the offensive coordinator job at Arizona State. He has the chance to revive his career, and with a strong season in 2024, will likely be a top candidate for several jobs next offseason. See more candidates at BarkBoard.
