Michigan football 2024 practice news: Camp storylines, depth chart predictions by proven Wolverines experts

Michigan football 2024 practice news: Camp storylines, depth chart predictions by proven Wolverines experts

Michigan football camp is rolling in Ann Arbor as the Wolverines prepare to begin their national title defense on August 31 against Fresno State. Replicating the perfect 2023 season will be challenging as the Wolverines revamped the Michigan football roster under new head coach Sherrone Moore, who took over after Jim Harbaugh departed for the Los Angeles Chargers in January. All eyes are on the Michigan quarterback battle, but Michigan also has plenty of battles on the offensive line and all over the defense.

Kirk Campbell takes over for Moore at offensive coordinator, while Michigan brought in veteran NFL assistant Wink Martindale to be the defensive coordinator. They’ll oversee the shaping of the 2024 Michigan football depth chart. Campbell said experience will determine who starts atop the Michigan football depth chart at quarterback. “We’re just going to start with the oldest down to the youngest, simple as that,” Campbell told TMI. “That’s a fluid operation that will change daily. We’ll make sure everybody gets the opportunity to run with the ones and we’ll evaluate it. Day-by-day process.”

That means Jack Tuttle, a former transfer from Indiana, will get some of the first looks, followed by former walk-on Davis Warren. Most of the excitement, however, centers around rising junior Alex Orji. He brings the most upside to this group as he’s shown tremendous athleticism as a runner when used in spot duty the past couple seasons. How he performs as a passer in camp will go a long way in deciding if he can claim the starting job this month. Get more updates on the Michigan QB at The Michigan Insider.

Another one of the Michigan football headlines surrounds the style of offense that Moore will implement. When Moore filled in for a suspended Harbaugh late in 2023, Michigan largely leaned on its ground game. However, Michigan might not be dominant on the offense line this season and Moore will have time to implement his own wrinkles.

With a strong defense and running game leading the way most seasons, the Wolverines never finished in the top three of the Big Ten in passing under Harbaugh. It’s unlikely that Moore will completely overhaul the program’s philosophy, but fans are eager to see if Michigan airs it out more in 2024 and beyond.
